15th Anniversay Camping Weekend

Last week was mine & Craig's 15th anniversary. We headed out on Wednesday for a long weekend of camping, relaxing, & amusement.

The first 2 nights we stayed at Palmetto State Park. It was swampy, lush, & beautiful.

Thursday night we made a huge grill out dinner with steak & chicken kebabs, portabello mushrooms, and asparagus.

We went on a few day hikes & did some geocaching. I found 2 caches on Thursday. We ran across a baby rattler on Friday.

The next 3 nights we stayed at Landa RV park right on the Comal River in New Braunfels, Tx. We saw a 6 foot water mocassin swimming right behind our campsite. We swam in the river quite a bit & I went skinny dipping one night. The trains were loud as usual.

While there, we went to the Snake Farm, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Schlitterbahn, Landa Park, & also ate at the Gristmill in Gruene, Tx twice.

It was a pretty damn good anniversary. I love ya babe!

Hello 2010, wanted to welcome you.

The previous year was fun, sad, excitting, & unexpected. 2009 brought so many different experiences.

I went to a casket race, where I got the most fab Utilikilt. I went exploring the swamp at Caddo Lake. Early in the year I lost my fave website, ISD. But because of that, some friends & I started a new site... HorrorDemons!!! Couldn't ask for a better group of friends to start a new venture. During the summer I traveled to So Cal to meet up with friends. Dawn, Kris, Ziggz, Candi, Mark, Lorraine, Sophie, & Bradley..I love you all. We went all over So Cal & then spent our final day at Six Flags Magic Mountain. Ziggz is still looking at pics up my kilt on Tatsu. While in Cali, I went to see Duran Duran in concert. All I can say is "First crystal tears...fallen snowflakes on your body, first time in years to drench your skin in lover's rosey stain" It was beautiful!!!!!

During the summer I traveled quite a bit for work. While roaming I got to hang with my best boys, Slash & Shape. Thank you both for having me hang & finally getting to meet my str8 BF's? LOL I love you guys!!!!

Halloween season started early this year. I went to sooooooooooo many haunts. And I worked at the best haunt ever. The 13th Street Morgue!!!! I became the electrician that died while on a service call. I have to thank all my friends there. Especially Alex, Jen, Larry, Chris, Billy, & Dan. It was the dream of a lifetime & can't wait until next season!!!! At our after party I was "Jackin' the Beanstalk!" Big green dick in tow..

I lost a great friend this year, my friend Den. It was hard to watch him die, but glad he's no longer in pain. My grandmother MIMI passed a few days before my bday, so it was kind of a sad X-mas season. The funeral was beautiful, but hard to see through all the tears. I miss you both Mimi & Den.

Christmas came & went, but it was nice to see all the different scopes of family. I love you all as well.

So, 2010, bring what you may. I'm up for new stuff & whatever you may have to toss at me.

LaVerne Pruett, 75, passed away Friday, Dec. 11, 2009.
Funeral: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Mount Olivet Chapel. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home.
LaVerne was born Aug. 6, 1934, in Fort Worth to Ernest Dodd and Hester Dodd Thornburg. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors: Loving husband of 26 years, Charles Pruett; sons, Gary Dodd, Tim Pruett and wife, Helen, Brian Pruett and wife, Nancy; daughter, Dodie Ballard and husband, Wayne; brothers, Charles Dodd, Ray Dodd and Danny Thornburg; grandchildren, Jenifer Dodd, Chris Payne, Michele Payne and Michael Tilton; three great-grandchildren; niece, Rhonda; nephew, Randy; and many other relatives and friends.

The Story of the 13th Street Morgue

The story of the morgue, its strange legends and tales, date all the way back to 1915, when a man named James Sharp built his house in the then remote city of Red Oak. James Sharp was a prominent Texas oil pioneer and banker who was partnered with Howard Hughes Sr. in the famed Sharp-Hughes Tool Company. The manor was actually the second house on the property, the first one, made of wood, was hit by lightning in 1915, and killed at least two men inside. After the first house burned, James decided to build a new house on the same spot. It was actually an exact replica of his then current residence in Oak Cliff, a stately red brick manor house, virtually fireproof, and even after all these years, both the house in Red Oak and Oak Cliff are still standing. Before the completion of the second house in Red Oak, James was found dead in his home in Oak Cliff, shot just behind his left ear. Speculation says he was shot by his jealous mistress, though suicide seemed to be a far more likely option.

Official cause of death.....the loss of two to three ounces of brain matter, according to his death certificate. The property in Red Oak was then passed down to James' son, Matt, who not only completed the house but between 1918 and 1928, built three barns, a pump house, generator house and coach house. All of these would help accommodate the raising and breeding of race horses, which he did very successfully for several years. Matt lived on the property with his wife during that time until tragedy once again struck, just after the Great Depression in 1929. Matt's wife was found in the house, poisoned in the dining room while he was found hanging in one of the three barns. It's assumed that he did the poisoning and then hung himself, but with no witness, its really anyone's guess as to what might have happened. Some have speculated that it was a suicide pact, or she forced him at gun point to commit suicide and poisoned herself later. Other stories abound as well, that Matt was a womanizer, a heavy drinker and abusive, though there is no actual evidence of these claims. The most far fetched, but entertaining of these claims told by local residents is that Matt Sharp had a mistress in addition to his wife, and when the two discovered each other, they joined forces in a jealous rage, killed Matt, cut up his body and hid it in the attic. Far fetched maybe, but indeed well within the realm of possibility.

This my friends, is where the Morgue comes in.

In the year of Matt's death a man named Jonathon Maybrick leased one of the barns for his residence and funeral parlor, which he named the "13th Street Morgue" while at his first address in Alvarado, Tx. He selected the largest of the three. While no one knows for certain, its stands to reason that he leased that particular building because he might have gotten it cheap, the stigmata of a building that someone committed suicide in is hard to ignore in a small town. It was, and still is, tall and imposing, constructed of the same red Ferris brand brick the manor house was built with, with windows that face East to view the rising sun. He turned the South part of the barn into storage for the hearse, converted the North section into a home and turned the second story over the center section into the funeral parlor and embalming facility. It does seem strange at first glance to put a funeral home on the second floor, but logistically it made the most sense since the North and South ends of the building were simply too small to accommodate the funeral parlor's needs. Though the construction budget was not sizable, Jonathon was able to turn the former hay barn into a state of the art embalming facility including a Turner Port-A-Boy embalming machine which still exists to this day. It also had the only crematory in the area, something quite revolutionary in those days, though much more common today. The land to the west of the building was used to bury people too poor to afford a plot in the city cemetery and there are still sizable tax discounts on the property for using some of the land for charity, though these tax breaks benefited the property owners more than the renters. Most of the stones in the graveyard are blank, if they ever had an inscription it has long since worn away, and most are cast of simple concrete. As of this date, no one has found any records of who might be buried there so it's really anyone's guess, but the locals who remember have stated it was graves for the poor or unclaimed and that a vast majority of the burials associated with the 13th Street Morgue actually took place at the regular city cemetery.

Jonathon, his wife Velma Sanders-Maybrick, and his two children, David and LeAnn Maybrick moved into their new home on the Spring of 1936.

The Maybrick's did very well in their new business. The next nearest funeral facility this well equipped was all the way down in Waxahachie, so Jonathon's demographic was fairly large and wide spread, both geographically and socially. He even did the funerals of the Governors' mother in law, and nephew. His most well known and notorious funeral was of a criminal who incidentally shot Ms. Abigail Helm. She was the 16 year old daughter of a farmer, Alfred Helm, a widower who religiously kept his 3 children indoors, and never saw much activity. Alfred had sent Abigail to the bank one afternoon however, and in a strange twist of fate, that happened to be the same day that the bank was robbed. The perpetrator shot and killed both the bank teller and Abigail, for seemingly no reason, though it was suspected that the teller had resisted the robbers attempt. The shooter's name was Raymond Reynolds, an out of work railroad employee. As he tried to flee, Raymond was shot dead by the towns only police officer. His death certificate showed him to be 38 years old.

Two days after the shootings, Raymond Reynolds' mother came to the 13th Street Morgue to arrange the funeral for her son. Jonathon at first refused, organizing and carrying out the funeral of a murderer was sure to have its negative repercussions, even in the largest of cities, much less a small town such as this. But, due to the mothers pleading and promising to keep the profile low and the sheer fact that he needed the money, Jonathon agreed. But, even with their best efforts to thwart it, the worst of news travels the fastest, and it wasn't long before the rumors began to circulate about the Reynold's funeral.
And this, ladies and gentleman, is where the story takes a dramatic twist.
Alfred Helm was not pleased to hear the news that the murderer of his child was getting a nice funeral, while he had to lay his slain daughter to rest on his own land with his own shovel. Jonathon was concerned he might show up at the funeral and cause a scene, but the day of the funeral, all was quiet.
A few weeks passed, and the Reynolds funeral was making its way to the back of most people minds. It was Christmas time, and despite being financially destitute, most people were determined to enjoy the holidays.
All but Alfred Helm.
In the earliest part of the morning, at 1am, on December 13th, Alfred cut the phone line and broke into the 13th Street Morgue, dressed as Santa Clause to fool the children if they awoke. As it turns out, no one awoke that sunrise. Alfred had strangled both of the small Maybrick children, Jonathon's wife, and finally Jonathon himself. After his grim business was finished, he set himself in a chair in the Maybrick's living room and shot himself in the chest. The police found a note that simply read verbatim, "please watch after my children they are the product of an unholy mind."

Jonathon and his family were laid to rest in the graveyard out front of their home, and Alfred's body was reluctantly picked up by his younger brother, and buried in Tulsa.

Thus should end our story......
However, it does not.

The barn still stands as tall and as stately as ever. It has never been rented or purchased, though the deed to the property has been made available for purchase by many of the distant relatives who have held it. Most all of the Maybrick's house still remains, as well as Jonathon's former embalming shop. Even the horse drawn hearse is still there to this day. No one lives there, though the spirits of the long dead still haunt the halls of the former mortuary and the cemetery outside. The most chilling of these is the transparent specter of a man seen in the barns mid section, with his feet not touching the ground. The building has been investigated by two reliable paranormal investigators and it is indeed deemed to be the 2nd most haunted place in Texas, 2nd only to the legendary Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells. But even these seasoned ghost hunters, will not venture in after sunset......

Craig & I drove down to New Braunfels a couple weekends ago. Went tubing on the Comal River, went to Schlitterbahn, the Snake Farm, ate at the Gristmill. Then of all places, we end up at a Gay Rodeo afterparty at a Quality Inn. That was fucking hilarious.

This past Saturday I went to a BBQ at The 13th Street Morgue. As you may know, it is my favorite haunted house, so it was awesome to be able to explore it off season & get some very cool pics. Texas Frightmare Weekend May 09

This past Saturday was a full day of horror & fun. That morning I went to Texas Frightmare Weekend. There were a lot of really cool guests this year. I mainly focused meet & greets with actors from the Friday the 13th franchise.

I met Dereke Mears from F13 09, America Olivo frm F13 09, CJ Graham from F13 pt 6, and Adrienne King from the original F13. They were all as nice as could be and very willing to chat & take pics.

There were a ton of other guests, but I ran out of money for autographs pretty quickly. I wanted to get pics with Alice Cooper, Karen Black, Tyler Mane, Marilyn Burns, & Tobe Hooper.... but just couldn't afford any more.

I ended up leaving with some pretty cool stuff. Like this autographed poster from Adrienne King that has some of Sean Cunningham's film notes.

There was also a Zombie Walk that morning, so lots of people in costume. Even a DEVO zombie!!!!

The local TROCARS Funeral Car Club had their Hearse & Shock Rod Show. There were a ton of badass cars there.

I also met up with some friends from The 13th Street Morgue. Great to hang out with Billy, Kym, Larry, & Dora. Extra special thanks to Larry for scaring the hell out of my by screeching up behind me scraping his huge battle axe on the pavement. That man always goes out of his way to scare the piss out of me. LOL

Later that evening I drove about 60 miles east to go to The Haunt House. We had the worst weather... Damn tornado sirens going off & monsoon fucking rain. I even got my car stuck in the mud on the way out. That was fucked....

But the crew at The Haunt House were just awesome! Even though the weather was lame & just a small crowd that showed up, they pulled out all the stops. I went through 4 times in normal mode, then a 5th time with ALL THE LIGHTS OUT!!!! That was so great! It was a ton of fun to hang with the crews from The Parker House & The Fear Factory. Good times indeed!

14th Anniversary Part 2

We celebrated our anniversary again this past weekend. This time we drove down to New Braunfels, Tx. W took our camper & stayed at Landa RV Park. On Saturday we went to Schlitterbahn. We had way too much fun, as you can see from the videos below.

Later that night we ate at The Gristmill Restaurant in Gruene, Tx. Awesome food & atmosphere. We go there at least once a year, if not more.

On Sunday we went tubing down the Comal River. It was a bitty chilly & overcast, but I still managed to get a light sunburn. I had 2 incidents on the river that day, both within 5 minutes of eachother. I went down the first tube chute & crashed into a kayaker. Then right after that, I went over a small fall & got sucked underwater about 15 feet away & my tube was stuck in the fall undercurrent. I kept trying to creep my way back to it, but the current was too strong. A nearby kayaker came by & went over the fall to rescue my tube.

On the way home we stopped back in Gruene & ate lunch at The Gristmill again. I also got these awesome shoes called Fivefingers:

14th Anniversary Part 1

Craig & I reached our 14th anniversary on April 23rd. It was midweek, so we decided to celebrate both the weekend before and after.

On Friday the 17th we went out for a great dinner then spent the night a boutique hotel called Aloft. It was pretty groovy, but not as cool as some other boutiques we've stayed in. We still had a great time. And we both got iPhones, which is awesome!

I loved the floor in the elevator. It had this blue liquid that squished around when you walked on it. It would have been so awesome in blood red. Very Dressed To Kill.

I love the Showtime program Dexter. Intelligent show about a serial killer..... raised by a cop after his mom was chainsawed apart in front of him in a cargo hold.... And who learns a code from his police father-in-law : TO ONLY KILL SERIAL KILLERS. All that & the day to day dramatazations and weirdness makes for a good season.

Haunt Review: Hatch & Kraven’s Slaughterhouse - Sherman, TX

I went to Hatch & Kraven’s Slaughterhouse on Friday October 3rd. I attended with Roadkill and Metal-Momma from DFWHauntedHouses.com. The Slaughterhouse is in its second year run, and these guys are doing an amazing job. The haunt is in an actual run down slaughterhouse. The atmosphere is very creepy, even the old dank smell of the slaughterhouse just puts you right into a vibe of fear. The actors at Hatch & Kraven’s Slaughterhouse are one of the most enthusiastic groups I’ve ever seen at a haunt. They never break character, even when outside the haunt scaring people or taking a break. The outside entertainment is a lot of fun, especially Slave. She cracked me up. There are a lot of actors running around engaging the patrons and there is a snack bar where you can get all kinds of food & drink at reasonable prices. One thing to beware…. Flip-flop sandals are lost quite frequently here…. They collect them for the shoe eater…

Once inside, you get to meet the sisters... one sweet… the other not so much. The detail in these first rooms is fantastic. Lots of wrapped “meats”, rustic furniture, and antiques give the place a sense of realism. After meeting the sisters, you are then ushered into the slaughterhouse…. At this point, you are in for a mad, frantic, wild romp through the haunt. The atmosphere is very dark, gritty, and dirty. The first thing you notice is the smell... dank with the scent of blood from years gone by. The slaughterhouse equipment is all around, creating a maze of pathways to explore. The actors seem to be hidden everywhere… constant screaming, banging, jumping out of anywhere and everywhere. It happens so fast and frequently, it’s very hard not be startled, even for avid haunt goers. The maze twists & turns so much, that I got lost several times. You then go outside for a short while, thinking you’ll get a break… Hell no…. You’re in for quite a surprise….

Once you enter the slaughterhouse again, it’s another non-stop barrage of screams and attacks. More twists and turns through opaque walls and refrigerators keep this are very interesting. You are then thrown into total darkness as you walk through a cattle chute, all the while being attack from what seems all around. Once through, you are in an outside area. From here on out, Hatch & Kraven and all their slaughterhouse fiends attack, scream, and chase you through the rest of the haunt. And believe me… it is non-stop.

Hatch & Kraven’s Slaughterhouse is one of the most fun and frightening haunts I’ve been to. A lot of the scenes do not have a lot of detail, but it really isn’t needed because of the sheer darkness that you go through. And with as many scares as there are, it would be difficult to notice a lot of detail anyway. This haunt is extremely actor driven, with each actor scaring you multiple times. These actors really love what they do and are very talented. This is what makes this haunt a real gem. There are some really great stilt walkers as well, one of which made me jump constantly. The price vs. walkthrough time is very fair, especially considering the high scare factor. I’d like to extend a special thanks to Mopsy the Clown and his crew for spending time with us, answering questions, and scaring us to death. It is well worth the drive out to Sherman for this frightening and frantic haunt.

Haunt Review: The Parker House – Lewisville, TX

I went to The Parker House on Friday October 3rd. I went with Roadkill & Metal-Momma from DFWHH.com. I also got to meet DFWHH member Twinsmom, which was a nice treat. We got there pretty early & waited for the sun to set as we spoke to the owner & staff, who were all very friendly. This is the first year The Parker House has been open. They have a very accessible location and tons of parking. The facade of the haunt is really nice, with faux brickwork, windows, a chandelier, and corpses hanging about. While waiting out front, we could hear screams from patrons coming from the inside… Then all of a sudden, a whole group ran out of a side door… They were so scared that the barely made it through the first 2 rooms before chickening out…. I was anxious to get inside by then.

The Parker House has some really great detail work throughout the haunt. Everything from the wallpaper, art, props, and general decor was very consistent throughout the haunt. The use of space at The Parker House was amazing. It constantly twisted & turned, double backing on itself. This really helped to keep you lost & confused while going through the haunt. One of the great things about this new haunt is their use of some great practical effects that I’ve not seen in any other haunts.

Upon entering the first room, I was struck by the detail & size of the room. There was so much to look at & so much to explore. You are given ample time to look around before a hidden door opens to lead you through a dark hallway then back into the main entry room for additional scares. The endless hallways inside The Parker House are very elaborate. Each scene has great detail & the actors are very good at scaring you especially the guy in the kitchen. He got us twice… Some of my favorite things were the haunted bedroom with the creatures behind the wall, the springboard flooring in one hallways which give you quite the uneasy and wobbly experience, and the crazy guys in the cages, one with the box on his head & the other jumping & screaming…. All very effective. One room in particular that stood out was the foam area. I huge room filled with blocks of foam that you had to walk through. It was much deeper & more difficult to make through than I imagined. This was a fantastic & unique addition to the haunt. The graveyard was a lot of fun as well, with lot of areas to roam & great actors popping out from all over the place. The bush girl was a nice & unexpected surprise. The dark cockroach hallway was done very well, considering this has been used in many haunts. I’ve never seen it used with the lighting in quite this way, so it was indeed a new experience. There is another hallway with foam, torsos, hands, and all kinds of stuff melded together that when combined with the strobes made it look alive and moving. That was very creepy.

For a first year haunt, The Parker House did an amazing job of putting on a scary show and the crew there has some great ideas that other haunts should be checking out. There were a few pneumatics that didn’t work or were off their timing, but not too bad for opening night. There were also a few areas that could have used a few more actors. But as a whole, The Parker House was a very good haunt and well worth the money for the walkthrough time & show that is presented.

I give this haunt an 8.5/10 rating

Haunt Review: 13th Street Morgue - Red Oak, TX

I went to the 13th Street Morgue on Saturday September 27th. I have to say I love the Morgue so much; I had to go through twice. It was especially great to be able to go through the haunt by myself and not having to deal with a group. This is truly one of the more frightening haunts I’ve ever been to. The attention to detail is impeccable. Cobwebs everywhere & done so realistically. The prop pieces are perfectly aged & give you a sense of such realism. They took a lot of time with small details, like wallpaper, art, and general knick-knacks that really make the place genuine & believable. The actors in the Morgue are always very professional & consistent. Their timing is perfect & they never lose character. And watch out for BoogiemanConCarne… He is one scary mother fucker….

Right from the start I was giddy with fear. The shadow of the axe raising reminded me of a scene in Friday the 13th. The graveyard was nice and dark & had plenty of great scare moments. Even during my second time through, they got me really good. Especially that damn scarecrow…. He scared the hell out of me more than once. The graveyard girls were nice and creepy… kept trying to sneak up on me. The hearse area is one of my favorite parts. It has such great atmosphere with the trees, lighting and shadows. The gravedigger is one to watch out for! He is so damn scary as he stares you down and scrapes his shovel. The Mortuary then changes your pace for a while. Nice and creepy funeral parlor with great detail. Simple things like the antique paintings on the walls make such a difference for the realism. The elevator and lab rooms had excellent detail as well. Great sparks, bubbling containers, and eerie lighting. The gas mask guy was really effective at getting you through the room. One of my favorite characters is the hide & seek girl… so fun to play with. The bathroom scene is just horrific. So nasty & slimy. Somewhere here, I forgot to mention the new addition of the girl on the rope swinging in the hallway. What an amazing addition this year. It’s very nice and creepy, and makes really great sound.

The attention to detail and the actors at the 13th Street Morgue are what make this haunt stand out above the rest. You can tell that these people really love what they do & put all they have into it. They want their patrons to have the most fun & frightening time possible. The wait time is not bad at all. The price is very fair considering the amount of walkthrough time and atmosphere that you get. The look and feel of the Morgue is consistent from beginning to end, and the frights are endless & relentless. I highly recommend the 13th Street Morgue to anyone who loves haunted houses.

I give this haunt a 10/10 rating.

Haunt Review: Dungeon of Doom - Red Oak, TX

I went to Dungeon of Doom on Saturday September 27th for their opening night. I’ll start off by saying that I was already a fan of the Dungeon. I was sad to hear it was closing, then overjoyed that it found a new home with Reindeer Manor & 13 Street Morgue. It is a massive improvement over Uncle Stinky’s Playground. I miss the old location in the Arlington museum because of the multi-levels & stairwells. But they have done a great job working with a single level, especially in the short time they had to put the Dungeon back together.

The line was short and I got to go through this haunt alone, which I live for. I love the movie theme of this haunt. The Silent Hill area was so awesome. The nurse was so chaotic & contorted, banging herself into the walls. I was mesmerized by her and had to kind of hang there for a while just to watch her. The Psycho scene was very nice too. I especially loved the strobe effect with the layers of bloody shower curtains. I got lost in that for a bit. The Exorcist bit was fun, especially because the crazy priest trying to save me. I was laughing my ass off at that point. That moveable floor really messed me up. I screamed like a little girl as I was tumbling through that corner.

The decor inside was well done. They put in some time to setup some really good themes. Most of the actors did a fantastic job. There was a little bit of timing being off, but I do know that there were some new actors and it was opening night. For it being the first year in a new location, I found this haunt to be a lot of fun and very worthwhile. The price wasn’t bad either, especially if you buy the combo ticket. The walkthrough time was fair when compared to the price. The atmosphere is very dark has great movie themed scenes. I’m sure each year in the new location will get better & better. Some things I’d like to see in the future would be a little more expansion and a few more recognizable scenes, such as Friday the 13th, Halloween, etc…

All in all, I found Dungeon of Doom to be a lot of fun with some good scares and recognizable characters, and would definitely recommend.

I give this haunt a 7/10 rating.

Reindeer Poop

I went to Reindeer Manor on Saturday Sept 27th & was amazed how busy it was. I should have known better to get in line for Reindeer Manor first, but I went to The Morgue & DoD beforehand. I ended up waiting in line for 2 and a half hours, only to be stuck with the worst group I have ever experienced. These teenagers heckled the actors, called them all kinds of names, and cussed them out the whole way through. They would tell everyone what was going to happen in every room we went into. I ended up yelling at them a couple times. Another person in our group was really pissed about it too. Then Security had to talk to them about it twice during the walkthrough. That didn't even stop the assholes from ruining the experience for everyone. Security followed us most of the rest of the way through. Toward the end the teens were still starting shit with the actors, and a couple of the staff got really agitated and just told them to hurry & get out.

Reindeer Manor is one of my favorite places. Even though I knew what to expect, I hate that these assholes had to ruin my experience, as well as the couple people there that had never been there before. If you're not at the haunt to be scared & have a good time, why the hell are you here? The rest of us spent our hard earned money & waited in line to enjoy what Reindeer has to offer.

To their credit, the actors at Reindeer were very professional & did their best to keep the show rolling. I commend them for that. I would have been so pissed having to put up with that after putting so much work into the haunt. And Security tried their best to get them under control, but the kids just didn't care.

I will be going back to Reindeer Manor later in the season. Hopefully I'll have a better experience next time.

How to Experience the Pinocchio Effect

Pinocchio!The Pinocchio effect, named after the fictional puppet-turned-boy of the same name, is a tactile illusion, an illusion that uses your sense of touch to "trick" your brain. Such illusions are remarkable because they challenge what we think we know about our perception of the world. Want to expand your nose and your mind? Try it out.

1. Arrange two chairs, one right behind the other. The chairs should both be facing the same direction.

2. Sit in the rear chair and have a friend sit in the chair in front of you.

3. Blindfold yourself or keep your eyes shut throughout the exercise.

4. Have your friend guide one of your hands to his or her nose. It will probably be easier to use your dominant hand for this part.

5. Bring your other hand up to your own nose.

6. Tap and stroke your friend's nose. Hopefully you're good friends, as this can seem a bit weird. Randomly alternate between tapping your friend's nose and lightly stroking it, as though you're trying to communicate with Morse Code. The more random your movements, the more likely you'll feel the Pinocchio effect. Be gentle.

7. Tap and stroke your own nose with identical movements. As you're tapping and stroking your friend's nose, use your other hand to reproduce the taps and strokes on your own nose. Try to synchronize the movements of your hands as closely as possible.

8. Continue for 30 seconds to a minute. After a while, you may start to feel as though your nose is three feet long (hence the name Pinocchio effect) or that your nose is somehow no longer connected to your body. Try it a couple times if it doesn't work the first time, and make sure the movements of your two hands are as identical as possible. If it still doesn't work, don't worry: about 50% of people can feel the Pinocchio effect, and you may be one of the other 50%.

I had the weirdest, yet kinda hot dream about Craig Bierko last night. (no details) And now this morning I find this:

I didn't even know his name until this morning. I just remembered him from a couple episodes of Sex & the City & I saw a clip of him from Scary Movie 4 last night. Aha! That's how he showed up in the dream. Fucking Freudian. Also starring in my dream were my freaky neighbors, my Jason hockey mask, and some weird outdoor mall that was covered in snow (It kinda looked like the town in 30 Days of Night).... My dreams are just getting more & more random.

I had this rogue dream after laying back down from an early morning feline fracus. I was wakened at 4:00 to the sound of constant meowing & howling. I got up & could not find Zero, but could hear him LOUDLY. After looking in closets, bathrooms, & cabinets for about 10 minutes, I realized that he was inside the wall. INSIDE THE WALL!?! He must have got into the attic & made his way down into the walls. I had to get him out through an air return downstairs. My kids really need to stop pulling this kind of shit that early in the morning. Mondays are difficult enough without having to lose sleep for random canine & feline tomfoolery.

Spring is finally here & all my trees are starting to sprout. The Japanese maples are looking gorgeous.
The past two weekends Craig & I have been planting new color & texture in the front & back yards. So far we've put in 2 new knockout rose bushes, 3 alpinia, tons of hosta, various azaleas, lilies, snapdragons, impatiens, geraniums, begonias, & petunias. I also planted 100 caladium bulbs. It's really looking good. In a few weeks everything should be filled in nicely.

Now I'm ready to work on some potted plants for the deck. My friend Chloe gave me some datura seed today & can't wait to get some seedlings started. I'll have to be careful with them because they are highly hallucinogenic & toxic. The last thing I need is my dogs on some fucked up Timothy Leary trip!

The Easter Bunny showed up early at my house last night. I was awakened around 4:00am this morning to my dogs shuffling around under my bed making a lot of crunching noises. When we got up to see what the hell was going on, we discovered them feasting on a rabbit that they had sectioned & strewn all under the bed. GROSS!!!!! I then had to clean up the entire mess, piece by piece. Now I'm so tired from lack of sleep & just grossed out from the horror of it all....

Note to self: No Easter basket for the dogs this year....

Pastor Renee Brewster reluctantly started making potato salad for church but was not entirely comfortable doing it, as Sister Frankie normally makes the dish. So she asked God for a sign, MyFoxOrlando.com reports.

"I was hesitant about making the potato salad because Sister Frankie makes the potato salad at church and I said, 'Lord, if it’s not for me to make potato salad then send me a sign.'"
Next she cut in half a potato and discovered it looked rotten. She only took a second look after her 10-year-old granddaughter said she saw an image of Jesus Christ on the Cross in the split potato.
On closer inspection, she saw the image, as well.

"That’s Jesus on the Cross. Just looking at it I don't have to convince," Brewster said.
She froze the potato heart and used the rest to make the salad, which was served during the weekly rescue mission.
Said Brewster: "I just want people to know God is still as real today as he was back then and he can show up anytime he gets ready."

This is almost as good as the Virgin Mary showing up as a nocturnal emission stain on my sheets.

While I was in New York last week, I got to meet Todd from Beware of the Blog. I got a couple of pics with him, but they turned out blurry.

He gave me a few DVD movies, which I put in my backpack. After our meeting I went to Century 21 & got stopped by a security guard when their alarm went off. It was the security devices in the DVD's that set it off. We got it cleared up immediately, but I was kinda stunned at first. Be sure & go check out Todd's blog. The man is hilarious!

Hillbilly Heaven Tennessee

Over the Labor Day weekend, Craig & I drove to Tennessee for a little fun. We stayed in a great little cabin with a jacuzzi that was in the Smoky Mountains. The place was fantastic & much cheaper than staying in a motel in the tourist trap areas of Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. It took us about 15 hours to get there, alternating driving. Before we got to the cabin, we drove thru the Great Smoky Mountains National Park & got a few pics. The forest is so lush and green with a smoky haze throughout the mountainside.

On Saturday, we went to Dollywood, Dolly Parton's famous theme park in Pigeon Forge. Dolly's park is so fantastic! It completely exceeded my expectations. The park is extremely themed, unlike most other "theme" parks I've been to. There are not as many rides as at other parks, but the ones that are there delivered like Dominoe's. The natural terrain & trees help to hide the rides, keeping the ride experience a secret until your strapped in, which made for ultra thrills!

Here's a pic of a flowerbed at the entrance to the park. It's Dolly's signature butterfly, but if you ask me it looks like Dolly's "major assets."

The Mystery Mine ride was totally fierce! I've never been on a coaster quite like this. It's a mine ride that starts off inside, bolts you outside into some corkscrews & inversions, goes back inside fro some scary theatrics, then finally drops you straight down back outside for dizzying loops of fury! We ended up riding it 3 times that day.

The water rides were a lot of fun too, but we actually didn't get as wet as the other riders...

Thunderhead was a great wood coaster. It was FAST & smooth for being of wood construction.

Now, the Tennessee Tornado is what blew me away. It's a fast coaster & it's over before you even know what hit you. It starts by taking you up a steep incline, banks a good curve, then drops 128 feet down into a tunnel, which completely disorients & scares the hell out of you! As so as you come out of the tunnel, you're catapulted thru a huge vertical loop, an inverted corkscrew, then into Dolly's Iron Butterfly. That consists of 2 helix loops that look like the under wire of Dolly's bra! You're immediately back in the station & in a state of shock. We had so much fun that we rode it 5 times!

We went to the Dolly Parton Museum while in the park too. The had so much Dolly, I felt like I needed a Bedazzler!

My favorite part was the 9 to 5 display, of course. It had her outfits & some props from the movie. It even had the pencils knocked all on the floor. The one thing that was missing was the box of Skinny-N-Sweet. (Or Rid-O-Rat, which looks just like Skinny-N-Sweet, except for the little skull & crossbones on the label...)

They also had a screen where you could try on virtual Dolly wigs!

Pigeon Forge is a complete tourist trap. It consists of all kinds of country musical shows, go-karts, overpriced crap stores, magic acts, and PANCAKE HOUSES. There were so many fucking pancake houses that I thought that it must be the state food! I got some pics of a few of them, but there must have been about 50 in a 6 block area.

While I'm on the topic of Pigeon Forge, we have to talk about the people. Besides pancakes, apparently the other major food group is Crystal Meth... I have never seen so many emaciated, tatted up hillbillies with no front teeth. It was filled with methed out, white, redneck prison looking guys with extremely obese wives & skinny kids with their tongues sticking through the giant gap in their jaws. Dead fucking sexy!!!! We even saw this guy at a gas station who was working his tongue into overtime during his crystal rush in mid afternoon.... In town it was so white that any other ethnicities stood out like a bastard at a family reunion. It was down right creepy since we're not used to that at all in Dallas.

On Sunday we went horseback riding thru the mountains. That was a lot of fun, but also scary because the trail is very narrow & drops off down the mountain on one side. Our guide was so hillbilly & had a lot of stories to tell us about various places he's worked over the years. One place he worked was in New York, giving rides to Fire Island for people who had missed the last ferry. I told him that I was going to Fire Island at the end of the month & he told me to stay away from Cherry Grove because that's where the drag queens are. Hmmmm. I left it at that & didn't happen to mention that I'd actually being staying with friends at Cherry Grove, one of which IS a drag queen! LOL.

Later that day we went hiking in the forest to a place called Laurel Falls. It was a beautiful hike & the falls were gorgeous. I said earlier that in town it was totally white, but when we got into the forest, it was inundated with people from the middle east, especially India. Hundreds of them hiking & taking pictures. It was so jarring in comparison to being in town or at Dollywood. I had no idea that the Smoky Mountains held a holy place for such a pilgrimage. LOL. I decided that I needed to get in a zen-like state & take a picture mediating on a rock. During my snapshot I got caught by an Indian lady who just stopped & nicely said "That is a nice pose." BUSTED!!!

We drove back on Monday & stopped outside of Nashville to see Craig's dad. It was great visiting with him & his family since we don't get to see them that often. Then it was time for the rest of the 15 hour drive home... We didn't make it back until after 2am.... Glad to be back from the land of Dolly, but will definitely go back again!

I've been playing two PS3 games for the past week. Resistance: Fall of Man & The Darkness. Both games are excellent. The PS3's graphics are superb. If you have a PS3, I would highly recommend these titles.

Tomorrow, Craig & I are driving to Tennessee for Labor Day weekend. We rented a cute little cabin in the Smoky Mountains near Pigeon Forge. I've never been there before, but Craig has always told me it's a complete tourist trap & that everyone should go at least once. After all, Pigeon Forge is the land of Dolly Parton!!!

We'll be going to Dollywood, Dolly's own country theme park. I know she won't be there, but it would be fantastic if she were. I hope to get some sort of 9 to 5 souvenir while I'm there, cuz I fucking love Doralee Rhodes! We'll also be exploring the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and go horseback riding. We also hope to go whitewater rafting down the Pigeon River, if the water level permits due to recent drought conditions.

In the meantime, we still have 2 more days here at work.
